Upper Cervical Care: A Breakthrough for Brain Fog

As experts in Upper Cervical Chiropractic, we understand the complexity of brain fog and its underlying causes. Far from being a stand-alone condition, brain fog often occurs alongside headachesmigrainespost-concussive syndromemild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI)dysautonomia, and intracranial pressure. These conditions frequently originate from issues in the upper cervical spine, disrupting critical processes that your brain depends on to function optimally.

Brain fog is more than a temporary lapse in focus—it’s often a sign of deeper dysfunction in your body’s most essential systems, including cerebral blood flowcerebrospinal fluid circulation, and the glymphatic system.

The Brain’s Essential Needs for Cognitive Health

Your brain relies on several primary systems to maintain clarity, focus, and function:

  1. Healthy Blood Flow
Blood flow to and from the brain ensures a steady supply of oxygen and nutrients. Even slight disruptions to
cerebral blood flow can deprive the brain of what it needs, leading to reduced cognitive function, memory loss, and mental fatigue.
  2. Cerebrospinal Fluid Circulation
    Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)
plays a vital role in nourishing the brain and removing waste. It washes away toxins, tau proteins, and other metabolic byproducts that accumulate from normal brain activity. When CSF flow is disrupted, these toxins build up, leaving the brain undernourished and overburdened.
  3. The Glymphatic System
This specialized cleaning system uses CSF to flush toxins out of the brain. The glymphatic system collects waste in the
central sagittal sinus, which then drains out through the jugular vein. Disruptions in either CSF flow or blood flow reduce the system’s effectiveness, causing waste buildup and cognitive impairment.

Upper Cervical Misalignment: The Four-Pronged Shutdown

misalignment in the upper cervical spine can simultaneously disrupt:

  1. Nerve Signaling: Misalignments interfere with communication between the brain and body.
  2. Blood Flow: Compressed arteries or veins limit oxygen delivery and increase intracranial pressure.
  3. Cerebrospinal Fluid Flow: Misalignments create turbulence in CSF circulation, starving the brain and impairing detoxification.
  4. Glymphatic System Function: Without proper blood and CSF flow, the glymphatic system cannot effectively clear toxins, leading to waste accumulation.

Causes of Upper Cervical Misalignment

Upper cervical misalignment can result from a wide variety of injuries and traumas, including:

  • Falls
  • Whiplash injuries
  • Hits to the head
  • Concussions or mTBI
  • Sports-related injuries

In our experience at Cerebral Chiropractic Center in St. Petersburg, we’ve seen patients develop misalignments from more unique accidents, such as:

  • Falling off a horse or bicycle
  • Cheerleading accidents, such as falling after being tossed in the air
  • Slipping on ice and hitting the back of the head
  • Gymnastics or wrestling injuries
  • Sudden jolts from rollercoasters or amusement park rides

Patients often report that their brain fog symptoms began weeks, months, or even years after one of these incidents. This delay can make it challenging to connect the dots between a past injury and current cognitive struggles. However, these misalignments are often at the root of the problem.

A Precision Solution: The Advanced Orthogonal Technique

At Cerebral Chiropractic Center, we address brain fog by correcting misalignments in the cranio-cervical junctionusing the Advanced Orthogonal Technique. This innovative method of Upper Cervical Care targets the root cause of dysfunction, restoring proper function to critical brain systems.

How It Works:

  1. Comprehensive Evaluation: Using advanced imaging, we analyze the alignment of the upper cervical spine to identify disruptions in nerve signaling, blood flow, and CSF patterns.
  2. Targeted Correction: The Advanced Orthogonal Technique uses a percussive sound wave instrument to gently realign the upper cervical spine. This precise, non-invasive correction involves no twisting, cracking, or popping.
  3. Sustained Stability: Following correction, we develop a customized care plan to ensure long-term stability and optimize your brain health.

By addressing misalignments at their root, the Advanced Orthogonal Technique:

  • Improves cerebral blood flow, restoring oxygen and nutrient delivery to the brain.
  • Normalizes CSF circulation, clearing toxins and metabolic waste.
  • Reactivates the glymphatic system, allowing the brain to detoxify and heal effectively.

Pain, Throbbing, Aching, Pressure, and Tension In The Head There has been a breakthrough in understanding why headaches and migraines occur and how to fix them. More studies have shown that problems in the upper neck play a big role in causing headaches. A specialized method of correcting the upper neck can reduce or eliminate the symptoms without drugs or injections. Headaches are not normal even though they are common. The amount of times a person gets a headache does not make it normal. It actually just means the problem is more severe and there is usually a root cause to the problem that has not been uncovered yet. Most people do not know the root cause of their headaches. This leaves many people simply managing symptoms with medication or just coping with the pain. Currently, the most common treatment for headaches is prescription drugs, and treatment like Botox injections is on the rise, even though it only provides temporary relief. In recent years, there has been a greater understanding of one of the more common root causes of headaches and migraines. Headache and migraine pain often originate from nerves in your upper neck. More specifically, it is in an area called the brainstem. (See figure 1) This brainstem is the transition point between the brain and the spinal cord. It is located at the base of your skull into the upper part of the neck. Inside of this brainstem is a group of nerves called the trigeminal nucleus, which is the pain center for the head, face, and neck. If this trigeminal nucleus of the brainstem gets irritated, it causes the head, and sometimes the face, to hurt. One of the most common causes of this type of nerve interference is an upper neck misalignment. An upper neck misalignment occurs when the bones of the upper neck get out of place from a fall, concussion , car accident, or some sort of head or neck injury. Unfortunately, not many doctors, chiropractors, or neurologists are trained to evaluate this specific problem, leaving many people suffering from headaches for years. The key to addressing these types of headaches and migraines is to find the root of the problem instead of masking the symptoms. If a person is found to have upper neck nerve irritation from a misalignment, then they would be a candidate for our specialized type of care used to realign the upper neck with a gentle correction. Once the upper neck has been properly realigned, the bones no longer irritate the nerves and the headaches begin to subside. This specialized type of care is called Upper Cervical Care . With so many people suffering from headaches, there is good news. This specialized treatment is available the Cerebral Chiropractic Center in St. Petersburg, FL, which opens February 2024.
