Back Pain

Looking for a Solution

When back pain takes you out of work and limits your life, drastic changes need to be made. Although common back pain treatments like therapy, surgery and nerve ablation focus directly on the location of the pain, the root cause of the back pain often comes from a different location in the spine.

Upper cervical chiropractors have a unique approach to back pain by focusing on the function of nerves in the upper cervical spine, and how they are effecting the function of the back. Instead of focusing on the area of pain, upper cervical chiropractors focus on correcting the root cause of the back pain.

The Cause and Effect Relationship

The spine is stabilized by the posture muscles surrounding the vertebrae. When these posture muscles become imbalanced, it can lead to bending or twisting of the spine. Moving an imbalanced spine can cause degeneration in the disks and joints in the spine.

The posture muscles are controlled by nerves that come from the brainstem. The brainstem is located at the craniocervical junction, which is made up of the joints between the skull and the upper neck. Any interference with these upper neck nerves and the brainstem can cause the signals going to the muscles to become imbalanced.  Therefore, when the back begins hurting, it is important to look to the neck for the root cause.

Addressing the Brainstem

Upper cervical care focuses on restoring the nerve signals that control posture. It is very similar to the way wiring works in a house. If a room in a house loses power, it is not likely to be a problem with each individual bulb, fixture, switch and plug. The pattern of power loss indicates that it is a circuit breaker problem, and that is where you would look first.

In the body, the back muscles are like the light bulbs. They are designed to stabilize the spine, but they are controlled by the nerves running through the upper neck. If the back is hurting daily or it “goes out” regularly, it would indicate that it is a nerve problem, not a muscle or disc problem. The nerves in the neck are like the circuit breaker for spinal posture and stability.

A misalignment of the craniocervical junction can cause interference with these posture nerves. By carefully analyzing the upper neck with accurate imaging, upper cervical chiropractors are able to determine the root cause of this nerve interference. Correcting the alignment of the craniocervical junction through upper cervical care restores the nerve signals so that the low back stabilizes and balances, which naturally reduces pain.

Aligning the Craniocervical Junction

The techniques used by upper cervical chiropractors are some of the most precise and calculated methods of correcting the upper cervical spine. Although these methods focus on correcting the alignment of the neck, its impact on back pain and the stability of the spine is powerful and effective. By stabilizing the upper cervical spine, the relief becomes long lasting.

Keeping the brainstem functioning at its best will not only bring lasting back pain relief, but prevent future back injuries by keeping the spine stable. If you have back pain, call to schedule an evaluation with your local upper cervical chiropractor.
